Illegal Immigration: some thoughts

The problem of illegal immigration seems to sleep in the winter and re-emerge in the spring. The weak economy has also abetted the tide of illegal aliens, while at the same time exacerbating the rancor felt by Americans whose jobs they are taking. A temporary amnesty that independently provides illegal workers and their employers with an incentive to register their status with the federal government can quickly and humanely solve this problem. While a amnesty offer may be a short term solution, the major factor driving illegal immigration needs to be addressed if the desire is to reduce illegal immigration. Currently, Mexico's GDP is about one half of Alabama's GSP, which is the lowest in the country. Until Mexico's economy strengthens, amnesty will only encourage more and no fence will be long enough or high enough to keep illegals out.
